Hot Life Science Investor Mandate 3: Global VC Seeking Broad Range of Opportunities

A global VC based in California is investing from its latest, which closed at over 2 billion in 2012.  The firm invests broadly in the healthcare and technology sectors, and while investments are made at seed, venture and growth stages of development, the firm primarily invests in Series A rounds.  The firm makes investments globally, and as the sizes of allocations are highly varied.

Within healthcare, the firm focuses on biopharma, medical devices, healthcare IT and healthcare service providers (including providers of diagnostic services).  The firm is open to investing in any indication area, including orphan diseases, and the firm will consider opportunities as early as preclinical development.  Within the healthcare IT sector, the firm’s expertise is primarily with companies that provide IT products and services to healthcare providers; Life science software companies, including connected devices and lab software, are also of interest.

The firm has no fixed requirements for companies or management teams.

Hot Life Science Investor Mandate 4: Venture Firm Seeking Emerging Gene Therapy and Oncology Assets

A life sciences-focused venture capital incubator/accelerator based on the east coast seeks to provide capital in the form of equity and convertible notes to seed and venture stage companies. The firm can provide capital in the range of a few hundred thousand to $2 million or more by leveraging its groups of angel syndicates. The firm invests in companies across the United States, Europe and Australia with a preference for California based companies. The firm looks to be involved in 3 new companies per year.

The firm is currently looking for companies in areas of medical technology/devices, therapeutics and companion diagnostics. In the medical device space the firm is open in terms of sector and indication and will consider firms that are in the development phase as well as those that have entered clinical trials. In the therapeutics space the firm is generally open as well however the firm is highly interested in areas of cell and gene therapy and oncology. For therapeutics the firm tends to get involved at the preclinical stage or during phase I of clinical trials.

The firm requires confident and experienced management teams. Given the early stage investment style that the firm has, they often work with management teams that are incomplete and have primarily academic backgrounds. Part of the value that the investor seeks to add is helping firms fill in the gaps in their current management.

Hot Life Science Investor Mandate 5: PE Firm Seeks Companies with Shortened Regulatory Path

A private equity firm based in Connecticut seeks to provide growth capital to life science companies. The group invests up to $10M in equity, venture debt, or traditional mezzanine. The fund prefers VC backed companies. Funding opportunities are reserved for companies in or willing to relocate to Connecticut.

The group prefers products with a short regulatory pathway, with a preference for medical devices. The firm typically avoids pure drug discovery, unless the product has an expedited regulatory pathway or is in later stages of approval. For medical devices, the group seeks technology with market traction. This includes companies with sales or a product in use by thought leaders.

The firm is willing to lead investments but prefers to act as a co-investor. The group invests in companies with established technology and a strong management team with deep domain experience.

Hot Life Science Investor Mandate 6: Swiss Growth Capital Firm Seeking Devices and Diagnostics Globally

A venture and growth capital firm seeks to provide expertise and funding to entrepreneurs and companies with global ambitions in life sciences and information technologies. The firm is based in Switzerland and focuses on early to growth and expansion stage (including spin-offs and restarts). The firm expects to close its new medical technology fund in the summer of 2014. The firm prefers to be the lead investor and possibly co-lead. The firm seeks to allocate $2-10M (in equity) per company through subsequent rounds of investment. The firm seeks to invest in companies that are based in the US and Europe. The firm is actively seeking new investment opportunities.

In the life sciences, the firm seeks to invest in therapeutic medical devices, diagnostics and monitoring, and digital health. The firm is opportunistic in terms of subsectors and indications. The firm prefers products that are close to or with market approval. At minimum, the product must have clinical data. The firm will consider companies that are generating revenue. Historically, the firm invested in molecular diagnostics, implantable devices for pulmonary and cardiovascular diseases, delivery and single-use devices for metabolic disorders, and dental device.

Typically, the firm requests a board seat in each portfolio company and generally holds a stake of 10-30 percent. The firm seeks a company with a strong management team or technical experts in the relevant technology.

Hot Life Science Investor Mandate 7: Private Investment Firm Looking for Shipping Medical Devices

A private investment group based in Canada is looking to make growth stage investments in medical device companies. The firm does not manage a committed fund of capital. The firm’s partners generally make up 20-25% of the capital and raises additional capital on a deal-by-deal basis from a small group of high net worth investors. The firm invests in companies that are based in North America. The firm is actively looking for new investment opportunities. 

In the Life Sciences the firm is currently seeking to invest in medical devices with market approval. The firm is opportunistic in terms of the class and indications. Historically, the firm invested in an image guided medical laser technology although they are open to all recently approved devices.

ECP seeks to be an active investor and will require a board seat/observer rights. The firm only invests in commercial stage companies but the firm does not have revenue requirements.

A Canadian government-funded firm is currently investing out of a healthcare fund targeting series A rounds, but it is open to other rounds. The firm seeks to allocate 10-15 million CAD over the life of an investment. The firm only invests in Canadian companies and is currently seeking new investment opportunities.

In the life sciences, the firm seeks to invest in therapeutics, diagnostics, medical devices, and HCIT. The firm is opportunistic in terms of stage of development and indications. For therapeutics, the firm prefers products that are at least beginning its Phase I trials and is open to orphan indications. For medical devices, the firm prefers companies with a working prototype. 

The firm generally seeks Board of Directors representation in its portfolio companies.

Hot Life Science Investor Mandate 9: Private Investment Firm Seeking Advanced Materials Science

A private investment firm that is based in the Eastern United States is looking to make equity investments into early stage companies of under $1 million generally in the Seed or Series A Round. The firm is also very open to syndication with other investors for larger rounds. The firm is looking for companies throughout the United States and is actively seeking new investment opportunities.                 

Within the life science space the firm is interested in companies that are leveraging advanced materials science in sub sectors of bio materials, diagnostics, analytics, and life science tools/services. Current portfolio companies in the space include companies developing improved therapeutics via biophysical and surface engineering, instruments and consumables for genetic analysis, DNA directed synthesis applied to human therapeutics and clinical diagnostics, and specialty enzymes for medical, biofuel, and industrial applications.

The firm is looking for privately held companies with experienced management teams. The firm looks to play an active role in its portfolio companies and generally looks to take a board seat.
