A venture capital firm based in Texas is focused on early and growth-stage biotech and medical device companies. The group is currently raising their second fund and is actively evaluating deals. Initial investments typically are in the $3M-$5M range and are usually in the form of straight equity, but may use convertible notes in select situations. The firm looks to take meaningful stake in portfolio companies and play an active role in their development. The firm is open to companies based in the U.S., with a specific interest in companies located outside of the major biotech hubs of Boston and San Francisco.

The firm is most interested in the biotech/therapeutics space and will consider medtech companies on a secondary basis. The firm does not invest in diagnostic or healthcare IT companies. The firm is mostly opportunistic in terms of technology type and indication area, however the group prioritizes companies with products addressing unmet medical need and unique mechanisms of action. For early-stage companies, the firm targets companies who have at least had a pre-IND meeting with the FDA and invest in companies ranging from pre-clinical to Ph. II clinical trials.

The firm has no strict company or management team requirements, but does look to be a very active investor and always requires a board seat along with an investment.

Hot Investor Mandate 2: VC Arm of Japanese Pharma Invests in Early-Stage Therapeutics and Platform Technologies in a Wide Range of Indications, Including CNS

A corporate venture subsidiary of a Japan pharmaceutical is looking to provide equity capital to seed and venture stage companies in the life science space, and invests across North America & Europe. The firm is looking to provide companies with $5 million over the lifetime of the investment and plans on making 2-3 investments over the next year.

The firm is currently looking for companies developing Therapeutics and Platform Technologies. The firm is looking for companies in this sector working with small molecules, vaccines and biotherapeutics. Indications of interest include nephrology, cardiovascular, immunology, metabolic disease the firm is especially interested in companies working with therapies for CNS disorders such as ALS, inflammation, fibrosis, NASH and orphan indications. Ideal companies will have assets in preclinical stages of development.

The firm strongly prefers that the company has a strong management team with experience in the industry. The firm historically has only invested as a co-investor although they are capable and looking to take a lead position if the correct opportunity arises. The firm is looking to allocate to companies that will eventually be able to partner long term with its parent company.

The firm likes to invest early, generally seed-series A, as one of the earliest investors, and be involved throughout the life of the company, helping it grow and develop. The firm invests primarily in companies in North America. The firm will generally invest $250,000-$2M in the initial investment, with the potential for continuing funding. Because the firm prefers to play an active role in their portfolio companies, the firm will only invest in a limited number of companies at any given time.

The firm primarily invests in therapeutics and medical devices. Because the firm prefers to invest early, they look at companies that are still pre-clinical/in development and, for devices, will consider PMA as well as 510k devices. The firm is indication agnostic, focusing on technologies that inspire their passion. The firm will consider investing in technologies related to orphan diseases.

The firm has raised numerous funds to date and currently has approximately €1.4 billion AUM. The firm is currently investing from its recent fund of €300M. The firm makes seed and venture investments, oftentimes investing in a company’s seed round and later leading the Company’s A round. The firm can allocate €1-15M initially and up to € 30 M over the life of the investment.

The firm is currently looking for biotech therapeutics and medical devices and tends to steer away from service companies. For therapeutics, the firm is agnostic in terms of subsector and invests in small molecule, biologics, cell and gene therapy, etc. The firm is also indication agnostic, but currently most interested in oncology (especially CAR-T assets), immunology/inflammation, CNS/neurology (with a particular interest in rare neuro conditions). The firm will consider products as early as 24-months from IND through to Phase III. For medical devices, the firm seeks paradigm-shifting technologies that can reach a human proof-of-concept stage in a relatively short period of time, and prefers PMA regulatory pathways although is open to other regulatory pathways as well.

The firm prefers to lead or co-lead an investment and generally requires a board seat in its portfolio companies. The firm seeks outstanding entrepreneurial management teams.

With the support of the pharmaceutical’s established expertise in the field of oncology product discovery and development, the firm will provide financial resources and company outreach to build strategic alliances to help translate novel research and high potential drug candidates into cornerstone products. Its evergreen fund structure ables the firm to take a long-term approach on investments. Allocations in co-syndicated deals start at $1M but mostly range from $3-10M. The firm could co-lead investments. The firm seeks to invest in businesses with a significant presence in Québec, defined as having over half of its employees based in the province, or significant activities in the province.

The firm has been a consistent life sciences investor for the past 30+ years. The firm is interested in both single asset and platform technology companies across a wide range of therapeutics including small molecules, biologics, cell therapy, gene therapy, etc. The firm is agnostic to therapeutic areas and invests at multiple development stages from pre-IND activities to Phase III. When investing, the firm doesn’t only provide financial capital, they also provide their global consulting services focused specifically on helping companies work across borders and in China. With the Chinese Government partnership, the firm seeks to bring good projects from North America to China and are focused on technologies that are at an advanced stage with patents that are willing to launch in Chinese markets or to set up factories and labs in China. The firm is however, willing to invest smaller amounts in good opportunities that have no interest/fit for the Chinese markets as well. The firm’s major focus within the life sciences is biotech and is focused on seed to series B rounds. The firm generally invests up to $10M USD for Series A deals, is flexible for series B rounds, and invests up to $1M USD for seed stage rounds.

Within the Life Sciences space, the firm is specifically focused on clinical tests, therapeutics, and other biotech technologies. The firm is also willing to look at medical devices to a small degree but is not very familiar with those technologies. Additionally, the firm is focused on technologies within these sectors that have a good fit with the Chinese Market or have a strong interest in working in China.

When investing, the firm looks to take a board seat. The firm provides consulting, localization services, and the ability to leverage resources in China to help the company grow alongside their direct equity investment and believe that these abilities can be best leveraged with a board seat.
